Your Labrador Retriever Puppy: Month By Month by Terry Albert (Alpha/Penguin 2012)
Before reviewing this book I have to make a couple of disclaimers. First, the author Terry Albert is a good friend of mine. We've known each other 20 plus years. Second, this is a new series by Penguin books - with three books in the first installment of the series - and I wrote the other two in the series. However, I promise I'll give you a realistic review with as little bias as possible.
The premise of this new series is to give new puppy owners a month by month overview of what's going on with the puppy's development and with some guidance as to what the puppy needs at each stage in his development. Some of the things discussed include physical development, behavior, nutrition, veterinary care, exercise, and training. Although some things may be uniform for all puppies there are also differences, especially in relation to breed and size. In addition, each title in this series would have a veterinarian actively involved, Deb Eldredge DVM, and a breed expert.
Terry's book, Your Labrador Retriever Puppy is perfect for her as she has shared her home with several Labs and has trained and competed with Labs. Her newest adoptee, Angus, is a handsome black Lab (and his name fits him). She knows the breed well and she also knows experts involved with the breed, including the breed experts who helped her with the book, Don and Barb Ironside of Fawnhaven Labradors.
I enjoy Terry's honesty in this book. She isn't trying to convert people who love other breeds into adding a Lab to their family. She isn't saying Labs are the perfect dog; instead, she's talking about puppies of this breed as they truly are. On page 24 she says, "Lab puppies can be really destructive.
