This is the second of the recently relaunched EC Archives. Originally released by Gemstone, this series foundered when Gemstone went belly up and a subsequent attempt to continue the line by publisher Russ Cochran foundered after only a couple of volumes.
The news that the series was to have a new lease of life under the aegis of publisher Dark Horse created a stir of expectation amongst EC enthusiasts and it is good to see these books now back on what looks like a much more reliable schedule.
The books are essentially the same size and appearance as their predecessors, so collectors and completeists can rest assured that the books will maintain a sense of continuity. Design wise, there has been a bit of sharpening up but again, within the intent of the previous books. The unnecessary black borders around the front covers have been eliminated, the two column text has sensibly been justified and the overall effect is just that much neater and cleaner.
But as regards the meat of the book, those all important comic tales of revenge beyond the grave, we encounter the overriding weakness that bedevils both Dark Horse volumes. Dark Horse have employed the services of Carlos Badilla. Badilla's work on contemporary comics is good, he has a nice sense of color and the modelling is par for the course with a lot of modern comics. Unfortunately he has applied the same mindset to these stories from the 1950s, making no allowance for the fact that the EC artists were, in the main, masters of tonal manipulation. As a consequence, the two EC collections he has tackled are way too overworked with modelling which fights against the line art. He is really wasting his time adding all this unnecessary rendering to deleterious effect.
