I'm going to break this review down into two segments, the first half being a review of the book as a work of fiction, the second being a caveat to potential readers.
PART 1: As a medical thriller, RESISTANT is a good read. It's exciting, fast paced, well-written and has enough twists and turns to keep you guessing. The main characters are reasonbly well-developed and realistic, as is the dialogue. While at times a bit simplistic, in general it makes for a few hours of good entertainment. I found that it held my interest well and that I wanted to keep reading to see what would happen next. On that basis, I'd give RESISTANT an objective rating of FOUR STARS.
PART 2: Let me first state that I have no objection to interjecting political bias into a work of fiction or the use of literature to disseminate political ideologies. Many works of great literature are vehicles serving just such a purpose. When you buy such works, you kind of know what you're getting. I have zero objection to author Michael Palmer including one here, either. But, quite frankly, as mass-market thrillers aren't the usual place you'd find such propagandizing, it might behoove the publisher to give potential readers an inkling of such bias by being a bit more forthcoming in the "blurb" rather than have 1/3 of your customers irritated (the other 1/3's being equally divided between people who'll love it and those who neither notice nor care!). So, this is merely a caveat for readers to enable them to make an informed choice about whether or not RESISTANT would be something they like.
Michael Palmer died unexpectedly a few months ago in October of 2013. “Resistant” is the author’s twentieth and final novel. It stands alone, but it’s the third book in the author’s Dr. Lou Welcome series. The novel was complete and at the publisher before he died.
I was curious to read his final novel. In the past, I’d enjoyed the rich medical details, tight plotting, suspense, and intrigue of his earlier works. The author’s untimely death saddened me and reawakened my interest in his work. I was curious how his writing might have changed over the years. I knew that he was a skilled commercial storyteller of unapologetically formulaic medical thrillers. It was a genre that has always held my interest, but lately, there seemed to be so many new and talented writers in this arena, I had no time or interest to return to Michael Palmer. Not until now.
What I discovered immediately about this Lou Welcome series is that the author had branched out into a crossover genre half way between political and medical thrillers. The novel is still packed with his signature, testosterone-filled action, suspense and medical detail, but there is a major controversial political issue at its core. It’s the same issue that’s currently dividing our Nation. If you’re on the liberal side of this issue, this book may please you. If you’re on the conservative side, it will probably make you angry. Whatever side you’re on, I’m sure you’ll recognize that the politics at its core is a gross distortion that adds nothing to the political debate.
“Resistant” is about a small clandestine group of ultra-fanatic right-wing conservatives. They call themselves the Society of One Hundred Neighbors. They came into existence in the era of FDR and Ayn Rand.
