The Nikon camera manuals are okay, but they just tell you what the camera does. What Darrell Does in Mastering the Nikon D610 (and his other books) is share how and why you would use the camera settings.
For example, several nights ago I was taking a picture of the full moon over the skyline. But the moon was too high in the sky to look right. Darrell does a great job in the book of describing the technique of a multiple exposure in the camera - the technique I used for this image. I took the first image with a long lens and the moon positioned in the top right corner, then a second image of the building I wanted in the bottom left portion of the image. By using Multiple Exposure and Auto Gain turned off, I ended up with a perfectly exposed image of the building with the full moon.
His other suggestions about camera settings and other features are very helpful. Throughout the book Darrell provides recommendations on camera settings. Some of these are very basic, but in other cases such as auto focus, he does a nice job of describing why you might use one setting or the other depending on what you shoot. The Nikon AF system is quite powerful - but complicated. Darrell does a very good job of explaining each area of the AF system settings and how they are impacted by your subject and type of preferred photography.
Bottom line - I highly recommend Mastering the Nikon D610.

Both instructions and suggested settings are provided. The illustrations and diagrams are well done and are very good at clarifying the points made. Good investment. Get it; you won't be sorry.
