I have read The Pioneer Woman's blog for several years ago, and had read the entire "Black Heels" series that she posted on her website. There is very little new material, and at times it was tough slogging through the book, since I already knew the plot. I'm glad I borrowed it from the library rather than purchasing.
I felt that Ree spent way too much time knocking me over the head with the fact that she had a privileged upbringing. I started to lose interest in her blog for the same reasons. I get that she lived on a golf course. I get that she spent a lot of time at the country club. Although Ree claims to have given it all up to be a "pioneer woman", it's clear that she is still very, very attached to labels and affluence. She did not change as much as she thought. Throughout the book she drops brand names every chance she gets. I did not need the constant reminders that she owned Ann Klein straight-leg jeans. I didn't need to know that the leggings she wore to go jogging on the golf course came from Gap. I wondered at times if companies paid for product placement in her book...maybe she's just setting it up for when the movie is made. Anyone who reads her website knows that she still buys expensive products despite her "rough" life on the ranch, so the name-dropping in the book seems particularly gratuitous.
The new material that was not previously found on her blog can be summed up as follows: barfing. At least it felt like that was the only thing she talked about. So much so, that I actually dreamt about being sick to my stomach a few nights after finishing the book and woke up the next day feeling queasy. I guess she was trying to emphasize how disastrous the honeymoon was, but it didn't really work.
