My general interest in aviation history lead me to purchased the book Hidden Warbirds. My intent was to included it in a list of other books to be read at some future date. However, after reading the introduction, then chapter one, my plans changed. I could not put the book down. This is a marvelous effort by author and aviation historian Nicholas Veronico. It was not only entertaining and informative, but inspirational, motivational and educational. It is very well written with many excellent color photos of recovery operations of warbirds from around the world that includes an excellent reference section at the end of the book. What I also found refreshing is the blend of the author working in the history of each aircraft with the people involved from the past, as well as, those from the present. I came away with a renewed appreciation for all the efforts of the various volunteers, financial sponsors and aviation museums who contribute to saving this type of aviation history heritage. It is they who have the vision and courage to rescue these important historic aircraft artifacts and bring them back to life. They keep this important of part aviation history alive for all of us to enjoy and appreciate. Each of the author's chapters describe a recovery operations of an aircraft that has the reader soon realizing these aircraft rescuers are the "Indiana Jones" of aviation. The book is a very well done effort and is a huge contribution to the aviation history literature that can be enjoyed by everyone.

Amazingly, 70 years after the end of World War II warplanes that flew - and were lost in action - in that epic conflict are still being discovered, recovered and restored to pristine shape. Whether at the bottom of the sea, in a steaming jungle or buried under frozen tundra, aircraft such as B-17s, P-61s, SBDs, Bettys, P-38s and Bf 109s have been rescued from their wartime graves. Nicholas Veronico shares some of the amazing stories of warbird rescue in HIDDEN WARBIRDS, a 2013 Zenith Press release.
Veronico, who operates the www.wreckchasing.com website, provides the fascinating details of over a dozen warbird recoveries including the 'Glacier Girl' P-38, 'Swamp Ghost' B-17, various Great Lakes SBDs/SB2Cs/SB2Us, South American Corsairs, China Lake B-29s, the 'Million Dollar Valley' B-26s and much more. Equally fascinating is the colorful collection of men, women, organizations and agencies who have saved those priceless machines through a combination of skill, daring, ingenuity and determination not to mention large amounts of cash.
The lively text is complimented by over 200, mostly color, photographs. It's especially interesting to view the 'before' and 'after' shots of some of those warbirds as they were transformed from a pile of rusted wreckage into a living, breathing aircraft.
I greatly enjoyed HIDDEN WARBIRDS. It's brimming with fascinating tales well-told and well-illustrated. Highly recommended.
