My husband and I both read this book in 2011 as part of a pre-marital counseling program in a Christian Church. After discussions with my husband, other participants in the same pre-marital counseling program, and the mentors in the program, I am very surprised at the positive response of reviewers on Amazon. I would like to provide an alternative perspective.
I think the book is perhaps best suited for a young couple (i.e. 18/19 years old) that is enamored with unquestioned joy at the prospect of an early marriage. I think the book may also be beneficial for a couple in which one or both partners have recently accepted the christian faith and have not previously investigated biblical principles as they relate to faith and romantic relationships. It does provide questions on a variety of important topics as a framework for discussion.
For couples with some knowledge of marital principles of the Bible who are considering the potential joys and difficulties of marriage, this book raises such issues too simplistically. It seems the authors have imagined specific problems for each chapter that all couples will face along with specific responses to which they attempt to lead the reader. Large sections of questions are formatted to begin with either a mock interaction between hyper-stereotypical characters or a very specific bit of information (such as 1 or 2 biblical verses) followed by a series of questions directed along a specific path of answers. Overall, the format is rather constraining.
To provide a specific example, the first chapter (following several initial worksheets) begins with an introduction followed by a relationship/marriage story for 2 characters ~3 pages in length.
